Woody Guthrie was a vagrant American folk singer from the mid 20th century. He penned this song in a period of American history beset by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, a period of American history where migrant workers were being targeted by the oppression of a wealthier class that sought to benefit exorbitantly from their labour.
This song is a call to arms for the the common man, and to defenders of freedom and free soil everywhere. “My land I’ll defend with my life if need be/‘cause my pastures of plenty must always be free.”
